HARVEY, La. (WGNO) — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating a use-of-force incident after a deputy allegedly hit a suspect in the head multiple times while performing an arrest.
According to the JPSO, a video of the incident, which occurred at the corner of Lapalco and Manhattan
boulevards around 6:36 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, was released on Friday, reportedly showing part of the incident.
Officials say they received multiple 911 calls reporting that a man was standing on the corner, making "obscene gestures" at passing drivers, walking in and out of traffic and approaching drivers' vehicles.
In response, deputies were deployed, the first of whom to arrive on the scene was a female deputy. She attempted to arrest the man, later identified as Le Chau, but was allegedly met with violent resistance, resulting in a struggle that went to the ground.

A second deputy then arrived on the scene and, while assisting the first deputy and attempting to handcuff Chau, allegedly hit him in the head multiple times. Chau was then arrested and given medical attention on the scene before being taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police say that while being booked into the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center, Chau again allegedly started fighting with both Correctional Center deputies and the arresting deputy, resulting in more charges.
In all, Chau is accused of two counts of resisting an officer with force or violence, battery on a police officer, battery of a correctional employee and disturbing the peace by intoxication. He has reportedly been arrested over 20 times since 2014 and holds multiple convictions for resisting an officer.
The use of force by deputies in this incident is being investigated by the JPSO's Internal Affairs Division. The investigation will reportedly continue until a determination is made on whether or not disciplinary action is warranted.
Anyone with additional information in this investigation is asked to contact the JPSO's Investigations Bureau at 504-364-5300.
