Southern football offers preview of 2025 season in spring game
Apr 13, 2025
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Southern football kept its spring game as usual, treating it more like a "game" by playing four quarters and keeping score.
In those few hours on the field, fans got their first look at what the Jags could look like this fall. A lot can change now until fal
l camp, as the transfer portal will open again on April 16, and more freshmen and transfers from this year's recruiting class will arrive.
This season, the quarterback situation for the Jags is quite different. Noah Bodden and Czavian Teasett entered the transfer portal, which left Jalen Woods as the clear starter under center for Southern. In the spring game, Woods looked more poised and confident in the pocket, making more accurate throws down the field and trusting his first read. But the number-one transfer quarterback in JUCO, Jamari Jones, stole some of that spotlight, making equally impressive throws while showcasing his dual-threat ability.

"Well, definitely, it’s his (Jalen Woods) job to lose because, you know, he was the lone starter from last year. He has the edge because he knows the system, and he just goes out and plays. But again, I mean, when we come back in the summer and go compete, everybody’s got to buckle down and go. And that’s the thing I like about these guys — they understand that nobody has anything sewn up. So they’ve got to stay sharp, because we don’t have a problem putting the next man up tomorrow," Head Coach Terrence Graves said.
Southern opens its season on Aug. 23 in Atlanta against North Carolina Central University for the MEAC-SWAC Challenge.
