Apr 12, 2025
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – The trial for the last former New Mexico State basketball player accused of hazing other players on the team has been delayed again. Lawyers for the former player have tried for months to delay the trial, with each motion being denied. But they say they are entitled to
an extension because of new charges filed earlier this year.
For the third time, the trial for former NMSU basketball player Deshawndre Washington has been delayed. This time, the order came from the highest court in the state. The New Mexico Supreme Court granted the defense's request for a stay of trial, which was supposed to begin on Monday.
Washington and two other teammates are accused of hazing and sexually assaulting some of their former teammates while playing for the NMSU men's basketball team, which came to light in 2023. The two other accused teammates are Kim Aiken Jr. and Doctor Bradley. Both of them took plea deals on their cases, agreeing to testify against Washington.

Back in January, both sides asked for Washington's trial to be continued because the lead prosecutor on the case was also trying a homicide case that overlapped. Following that, the state filed new charges against Washington in February, resulting in 15 felony charges against him. Since then, the defense has filed a motion with the state supreme court to have the trial stayed.
Court documents show that Washington's defense wants to reinstate Washington's former attorney, David Mestemaker, arguing that the defense was not ready. The defense also argues in their writ to the court that because of the new indictment against Washington in February, his new trial date should take place no later than May 27, 2026. If convicted on all charges, Washington could face up to 45 years behind bars.
