Apr 12, 2025
PENFIELD, N.Y. (WROC) — A Penfield High School Robotics Team has secured a spot in the 2025 World Championship, where they will compete against over 30 nations.
The 1511 Rolling Thunder placed first in the Impact team at the Buckeye First Robotics Regional competition.
The team will compete
for the World Championship title in Houston, Texas from April 16 through April 19.
Students discussed their motivations for joining the team and its benefits.
Charlie Heinen, a junior, said joining the team has increased his skills outside of competition.

"I was interested in programming the robot and growing computer science and engineering skills, but in addition to just those," Heinen said, "I've actually learned a lot of leadership and communication skills on the team too, by running some of our team outreach events that we do in our community to get other kids inspired to join FIRST teams and be interested in STEM."
There's a place for all students, not just those interested in the mechanics.
"It really isn't just robots," said Flores. "We need skillsets from literally everywhere."
Students and community partners unite to raise mental health awareness
For example, the team shared that a student drew the logo for their t-shirts and the team has their own website and Instagram page.
Kevin Phan, a sophomore, said students should "just go for it" when considering joining a robotics team.
"Robotics might seem daunting because of the skill gaps but on Team 1511 for example, we teach our new students through our ThunderTech curriculum how to do all these skills like programming, engineering, and how to build a robot. Overall, it's just a really great learning experience."
A GoFundMe has been set up for community members to donate towards their trip.
Congratulations 1511 Rolling Thunder, we wish you the best!
