Wichita woman arrested for child endangerment after shooting

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A Wichita woman has been arrested for aggravated child endangerment following a shooting that critically injured a 4-year-old girl on Friday.
Officers were called to a neighborhood store in the 2500 block of East Harry around 1:50 p.m. on Friday after receiving reports of
a child who had been shot. When police arrived, they found the young girl with a gunshot wound to her lower torso. She was taken to a local hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

According to police, the child gained access to an unsecured firearm left out by her guardian and unintentionally shot herself. A 50-year-old woman has since been taken into custody, according to a news release from the Wichita Police.
The case is still under investigation and will be forwarded to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for formal charges.
Police are reminding the public of the importance of securing firearms in the home, especially around children. The department is offering free gun locks at all substation locations, no questions asked.
