The unofficial start to the spring track and field season in Mercer County, the first chance for athletes to really stretch their legs, has always been the CVC Relays.
The wet and cold conditions forced the annual precursor to the Penn Relays for locals to be called off as officials elected to cance
l Saturday’s event at Robbinsville High.
The 129th edition of the world’s biggest track and field carnival takes place April 24-26 at historic Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
While CVC schools will send 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams — the 4×800 qualifiers will be announced on April 18 — a pair of individual field athletes have also qualified. Lawrence High triple jumper Matin Mahmoud and Trenton High shot putter Sonjay Baylor-Reeves are both in their respective fields.
Mahmoud achieved the qualifying distance of 46-3.25 at the Indoor New Balance Nationals where he finished 15th by landing an indoor PR of 46.75. Mahmoud’s outdoor best is 43-1.25 at last season’s the Group III meet.
Baylor-Reeves had a breakout season last year for the Tornadoes when she threw 41.8 at the Group IV meet and then went on to finish 10th at the MoC with a 39-5. During the indoor campaign, she tossed a PR of 43-5.75 at the CVC Relays.
The girls 3000 meter run also features a local flavor. Lawrenceville Prep’s Blair Bartlett and Northern Burlington’s Liliah Gordon are in the preliminary field. Both are Penn Relays veterans at this event, having finished eighth (Gordon in 9:45.66) and 13th (Bartlett in 9:51.74) last year, respectively. ...read more read less
