July runoff certain in District 1 supervisor race, new election results confirm
Apr 11, 2025
Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre have all but cinched their places in a July runoff in the special election for District 1 county supervisor, the latest results showed Friday.
McCann still held a double-digit lead over Aguirre going into the weekend, but both can
didates were far ahead of the race’s five other contenders.
If either candidate were to secure more than 50% of the votes once all are counted, they would win the election — though both candidates expect the race to go to a runoff.
As of Friday evening, McCann had about 42% of the vote and Aguirre 32%, and voter turnout had climbed to 17.8%, with some ballots remaining to be counted.
Turnout is typically low in special elections, county officials have said. The last special election in 2023 only saw 24.5% of registered voters participate.
But much is at stake in this election. The race is nonpartisan, but the incoming District 1 supervisor will break the 2-2 deadlock between the two Democrats and the two Republicans on the current Board of Supervisors.
McCann has been endorsed by the local Republican party and Aguirre by the Democratic party.
The District 1 seat represents the cities of Chula Vista, National City and Imperial Beach, the San Diego neighborhoods of Barrio Logan, Nestor and San Ysidro and the unincorporated areas of Bonita and parts of Spring Valley.
The region has been without representation since Nora Vargas announced earlier this year that she would not serve a second term after she was re-elected last November.
Beyond McCann and Aguirre, the other candidates were San Diego City Councilmember Vivian Moreno, Chula Vista Councilmember Carolina Chavez, energy consultant Elizabeth Efird, businessman Louis Fuentes and Lincoln Pickard. ...read more read less
