US citizens arrested for attempting to smuggle children into country

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Two United States citizens are in custody after Border Patrol agents at an immigration checkpoint in California found two unaccompanied children that were smuggled into the United States illegally, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reports.

While being questioned, the woman driver and woman passenger reportedly told Border Patrol agents different stories, and later admitted to having crossed into the United States from Mexico by the San Luis Port of Entry. Border Patrol agents also noticed two girls asleep in the back seat.
The vehicle was referred to a secondary inspection where Border Patrol agents reviewed the children's documents and found their names and photos did not match their IDs. That's when agents also learned the children were not related to the driver or passenger and that the driver did not know the children's mother, CBP reports.

During the investigation, Border Patrol found the two children were 10 and 12 and were unaccompanied minors from Mexico.
“And this, folks, is how the trafficking of children starts,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gregory K. Bovino of the El Centro Sector. “It’s almost unbearable to think about what heinous crimes await children who aren’t with their parents. The border environment has been rife with this type of activity over the past several years, however, the focus has now shifted, and heavy sentences await smugglers who hurt kids.”
CBP reports both the driver and the adult passenger are facing alien smuggling charges. The vehicle was also seized as evidence. ...read more read less
