Reward for escaped prisoner rises to $35K after Mexican officer killed

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- The reward has increased for a man who escaped from a California prison where he was serving a life sentence, and is now wanted for allegedly killing a Mexican officer when they tried to arrest him on Wednesday.

ce in the United States announced the reward for information leading to the arrest of Cesar Moises Hernandez has increased to $35,000.

Hernandez was serving 80 years to life for first-degree murder in a California prison when he escaped custody on December 2, 2024, during transport to the Kern County Courthouse, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) officials report.
Authorities closed in on Hernandez in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico, on Wednesday, April 9, and attempted to take him into custody, according to U.S. Marshals. However, during the operation in the Barcelona Residencial neighborhood of Tijuana, Hernandez eluded arrest and is accused of shooting and killing State Citizen Security Force (FESC) Agent Abigail Esparza Reyes.
The U.S. Marshals Service is actively searching for Hernandez, who is now wanted on charges of escape, and murder of a law enforcement officer (Mexico).
Cesar Hernandez is described as 35 years old, 5'05" , 161 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair.

Authorities say he is considered armed and dangerous, an escape risk and has violent tendencies.
