Apr 11, 2025
A man who was sleeping when his Riverside home caught fire early Friday, April 11, was critically injured when he inhaled smoke, the Riverside Fire Department said.
The man was able to get out of the house in the 2200 block of 5th Street and tried to fight the fire with a garden hose, Battalion Chie
f Bruce Vanderhorst said. The man cut his hand on glass at some point.
Firefighters who arrived around 3:15 a.m. entered the two-story house and rescued the man’s dog. Firefighters gave oxygen to the man and the dog.
They used a special mask for the dog that is designed to fit over pets’ noses, Vanderhorst said. Riverside’s squads and engines have carried those masks for about 10 years, he said.
