A woman died and two other people were injured Thursday night after a pickup drove into San Diego Bay, San Diego Harbor police said.
Harbor police responded just after 9 p.m. to the waterfront near the southern edge of Harbor Island regarding a report of truck that had been speeding south on Harbor
Island Drive and ended up in the bay.
Harbor police officers arrived within three minutes and found an unconscious but breathing woman who had been pulled ashore by fishermen, officials said.
“We were just fishing right here off Harbor Island and we heard the crash and splash of the car going in the water and immediately made a dead sprint to see what was going on,” Dylan Monroe, one of the fishermen, told Sideo TV.
Monroe said that upon seeking the submerged vehicle, he stripped his clothes off and dove into the water, finding the woman out of the vehicle.
“I grabbed her and made a beeline toward shore as fast as I can,” he said.
Monroe’s friend also entered the water to help pull the woman ashore as paramedics arrived on scene.
Just before 9:20 p.m., personnel with the Harbor police, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego lifeguards dove into the bay to find the pickup and look for additional people.
An unresponsive man and an unresponsive woman were found trapped inside the pickup and pulled from within.
All three people were transported to the hospital.
The woman found trapped inside the truck was pronounced dead just before 11:15 p.m.
The conditions of the woman pulled to shore and the man found inside the pickup were unknown as of Friday morning.
Footage from Sideo shows the submerged black pickup being lifted from the water by responders.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by Harbor police. ...read more read less
