FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A Fresno city employee is in critical condition after being attacked from behind while he was working in Chinatown, the Fresno Police Department said.
Officers say they received a call at around 7:30 a.m. from the area of Kern between F and G streets in Chinatown.
Police officers arrived at the scene to find a city employee down. The city employee, who police say is a 56-year-old, was found lying unconscious.
Per detectives, further investigation determined the man was working with an electrical box at the intersection when the suspect approached him from behind and hit him in the back of the head with a blunt object. After the victim fell to the ground, officers say the suspect "casually walked away" into a nearby alley.
Investigators say they found video surveillance that showed the moment the worker was hit from behind. The video shows the worker falling to the ground, unconscious; he was transported to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Fresno City Mayor Jerry Dyer described the incident as a "vicious attack." He says the victim had been working with the city since 2006 as an electrician in the Traffic Signal and Street Lights division.
"This was a vicious and unprovoked attack in the daylight. There is nothing the city worker could have done to provoke this," said Dyer.
