UMass Amherst employees protest for fair pay to help make ends meet

AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP)- Faculty and librarians at UMass Amherst protested on Thursday, April 10, 2025, for fair pay.
The growing wage for college graduates exceeds the minimum faculty wage at UMass Amherst.
The sooner the UMass Administration agrees to their proposal, a Faculty member told 22N
ews, will stop rallying.
Since last spring, the Massachusetts Society of Professors and Librarians has been meeting with the University Administration to negotiate contracts. There have not been any rapid solutions.They said most campus unions, including theirs, have been without a current contract since last July. Therefore, they've been protesting at the chancellor's office and the provost's office for answers.
"We are particularly standing up for fair wages, especially the wage floor for the lowest faculty and librarians, and for childcare, and other facets of our working conditions," said Michael Ash, UMass Amherst Professor, Economics Public Policy.
Faculty members also told 22News that they want the answers now, so they can pay more attention to the many pressing matters arising from the federal actions.
At the end of it all, it's up to the governor. Governor Maura Healey dictates the salary for the raise perimeters for state employees, which includes faculty at UMass Amherst. ...read more read less
