Threats lead to four-hour closure
Court documents obtained by FOX59/CBS4 indicate that FCSO deputies were called to assist at the courthouse after multiple employees reported receiving phone calls from a man claiming that bombs would be detonated within 15 and 20 minutes.
The courthouse was evacuated as authorities established a perimeter to investigate the validity of the threats. At one point during their investigation, FCSO requested assistance from Indiana State Police to dispatch a specialized bomb unit.
Deputies also utilized a K9 unit on the scene that was trained to identify possible explosives. The K9 completed a full assessment of the courthouse and could not locate any explosives. The courthouse remained closed for four hours until ISP's Bomb Unit cleared the entire area.
Authorities then attempted to trace the phone number that made the threatening calls but were initially unsuccessful as the number showed up as unavailable and blocked via the caller identification system, court documents said.
Court documents detail how the first threat was allegedly made around 9:07 a.m. In this call, Sheets allegedly told the employee that she could thank Judge Hubert Branstetter, who works as a judge for Fayette County Circuit Court.
The courthouse received the second call around three minutes later. This call again stated that two bombs had been placed inside the courthouse and that everyone inside would "burn", according to court documents.
Deputies reviewed an audio recording of the call Sheets allegedly made to the Fayette County Central Dispatch.
"Yes, I placed a bomb at the courthouse, it will go off in fifteen, and one will go off in twenty minutes. Have a nice f***in day," Sheets is alleged to have said during this call.
Investigation into the threats
Investigators managed to trace the phone number to Metronet Inc., where they submitted a subpoena to obtain evidence in the case. Court documents show how Metronet Inc. provided detectives with the number that was reportedly used to make the threatening calls.
Detectives ran that number through local law enforcement databases and found that it allegedly matched Sheets. Detectives noted that Sheets was arrested after he allegedly made the bomb threats for a separate drug-related charge.
Detectives proceeded to interview Sheets on April 8. After being presented with evidence gathered in the case up to that point, Sheets allegedly admitted that he did make the threatening calls.
He said his girlfriend had a scheduled court hearing on the same day the threats were made. He explained that he was worried she would not be sentenced to the Fayette County Drug Court Program due to an unrelated "law enforcement issue" based out of Ohio that he was worried could cause issues.
Sheets went on to state that he made the calls from a Dollar General Store near the intersection of 3rd Street and Central Avenue in Connersville. After making the calls, he allegedly walked to a Speedway Gas Station, where he removed the phone's battery and tossed it in the trash.
Detectives reviewed surveillance footage that appeared to corroborate this, as Sheets could be seen exiting the Dollar General Store before heading to the gas station. Once there, he could be seen reportedly disassembling a cell phone, court documents said.
Sheets was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Fayette County Jail, where he was preliminarily charged with two counts of Intimidation, with both being Level 5 Felonies.
According to online court records, Sheets is scheduled to appear in Fayette Circuit Court on July 21 for a jury trial. ...read more read less
