'They run like deer': 'Feral' cows seen roaming in northwest Allen County
Apr 11, 2025
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- For more than a year, a pair of peculiar cows have been roaming parts of northwest Allen County near Fort Wayne city limits, and the bizarre bovines have been spotted recently by residents while also getting the attention of the Allen County Sheriff's Department.
The co
ws belonged to the family that runs Werner's Garage -- an auto repair shop off Fritz Road that specializes in servicing European-made vehicles -- until they got loose one day. Since then, the cows have stayed roughly within the confines of the area around Fritz and Cook roads, but have never been caught.
The owners of Werner's Garage, located on Fritz Road, lost the cows more than a year ago.
On Thursday, a WANE 15 viewer reached out about how family members who live on Cook Road have encountered the cows through the trails -- and piles -- of evidence they leave behind.
The cows have also been under some surveillance by the Allen County Sheriff's Department. Adam Stresemann, a field service officer for the department, said he first received a call about the cows in March when they were blocking a road in the area.
Stresemann also visited the aforementioned family this past week where he learned that these apparently are not ordinary cows.
"They've kind of gone feral," Stresemann said. "The person I spoke with Wednesday said they are seeming like deer. They run like deer. They come out and graze in the night, and then when they see people, they retreat back to the woods."

Employees at Werner's Garage shared a similar sentiment and said many people have attempted to capture the cows using 4-wheelers, bows and arrows and other tools, but none have succeeded.
The cows have been so elusive that neither Stresemann nor Werner's Garage even have photos of the beasts.
According to employees with Werner's Garage, the cows are still often seen in the land and woods near the business, which is in the area of Fritz and Cook roads.

Although the cows are still loose, Stresemann said the department's level of concern is low unless they start to damage property or become a threat to public safety.
"They seem to enjoy the woods ... until they get in the roadway and cause a public safety issue, then we would take different measures to try and get them taken care of, but right now they're just doing their thing," Stresemann said.
For those who may encounter the cows or any other domesticated animal, Stresemann recommended contacting either a non-emergency line or a voicemail line that the Allen County Sheriff's Department offers. The non-emergency line is 260-449-3000, and the voicemail line is 260-449-7491.
