'It's like I keep getting one door slammed after another': Resident's daughter expresses frustration with Elderwood

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A woman who says care for her mother has gone downhill at Elderwood at Lockport was among multiple people picketing Monday to call for better wages in order to recruit and maintain staffing at the nursing facility.
Cindy Bucolo said her mother Judy has bedsores following
seven years at Elderwood.
"They don't have the staff to change her when she needs to be changed," Bucolo said. "You can have care plan, after care plan, after care plan and it's on there for her to be changed every two hours ... she goes four hours, she's dripping wet."
During a recent visit from out of town, Bucolo said she imagined what she would tell police if she got pulled over for speeding to reach her mother.
"'If you can drive faster I'll jump in your car cause I'm going to save my mother at Elderwood,'" she said.
Multiple nursing homes in both Niagara County and Erie County began picketing on Monday for fair wages, better health insurance benefits and improved pension plans.
CNA Marcie Livergood, who has worked at Elderwood for 26 years, said when the facility is short-staffed, residents are not getting the care that they paid for. She recommends that families write letters to the legislation and to leaders at the facility.
Christine Jones, another CNA who works midnights, said it is usually only her and one nurse working at a time and that more help is necessary.
"Residents are suffering, I'm suffering," she said. "I love my job, but it's killing me."
Bucolo said her mother's money has run out with all of her social security going toward Elderwood. She said she has talked to social workers, administrators and supervisors until she is blue in the face.
"It's like I keep getting one door slammed after another," Bucolo said.
