On April 4, the Salvation Army arrived in Selmer, Tennessee, to serve locals and first responders hot meals, hydration, and emotional and spiritual care. Services are being provided at the Selmer Civic Center on 230 North 5th Street.
So far, crews with the Salvation Army say they have served 1,063 meals, 1,811 drinks, 826 snacks, and 62 emotional and spiritual care contacts. They say 100 meals are distributed at breakfast and more than 250 meals each for lunch and dinner.
Volunteer Roger Fowler says many roads remain impassable in the hardest-hit areas.
“Some roads are completely wiped out. It’s been hard to reach certain communities, and each night we’ve had more storms, which makes everything more difficult—including flooded roads,” He said.
Fowler says one woman's home was spared during the storm while other homes around hers were destroyed. He says she has since devoted her time to helping her neighbors recover as well by cooking meals and distributing supplies.
“People are hurting, but they’re helping each other. It’s humbling to see," Fowler said.
