Former NC State football player charged with abusing infant, warrant shows

GARNER, N.C. (WNCN) — A former North Carolina State football player is facing a felony child abuse charge after fracturing multiple bones on his infant, according to a warrant.
Tyler Baker-Williams was arrested Thursday by Garner police for an incident that happened on March 22, per the warrant
. According to the document, Baker-Williams "did intentionally inflict serious bodily injury" on his five-month-old baby, resulting in the infant suffering a fractured toe, fractured ankle and fractured rib.
Baker-Williams faces one felony charge of intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. He was given a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to make an appearance in Wake County court on Friday afternoon.
The former Southeast Raleigh High School standout got playing time at safety, running back and on special teams in 2018 during his freshman season at N.C. State. Over five seasons with the Wolfpack, Baker-Williams played mostly as a nickel, safety or corner, amassing a total of 153 tackles and five interceptions. In both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, he won the team's DeWayne Washington Award, which is given to the top defensive back.
Baker-Williams was named honorable mention All-ACC in both of his last two seasons at N.C. State, in 2021 and 2022. He was undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft but spent some time that preseason with the Los Angeles Chargers before ultimately being cut from the roster and practice squad.
He was then signed as a free agent in October 2023 by the New Orleans Breakers of what was then the United States Football League (which has since merged with the XFL to create the United Football League). Arrest records list Baker-Williams' current employer as the Canadian Football League.
