Fans pack restaurants to watch Alex Ovechkin make history

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Jubilation filled Whitlow's at the Wharf Sunday afternoon, as fans cheered Alex Ovechkin's 895th goal, becoming the NHL's all-time goal scorer.
The Washington Capitals' captain moved ahead of Wayne Gretzky with the second-period power play goal.

s history? Like, what just happened to you guys," said Janelle Hendrix, of Silver Spring, who joined others in the celebration.

The moment became an emotional time for some at the watch party hosted by the Capitals.
"It takes so much to get to this point. Hockey is a sport that is a mental, physical, emotional," said Sierra Kantamneni, of Arlington, "You put your body through it. You put your mind through it."
Ovechkin tied Gretzky's record in Friday's win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Capital One Arena. It happened during his 1,486th NHL game, seven more than Gretzky needed.
"Over the years he's been so durable," said Ethan Rau of Leesburg, Va. "I mean, it's so scoring over 40 goal season when he's almost 40 that it's insane."
Fans described watching the win as something that they will always remember.
"What we witnessed today was the intersection between the past, present and the future. And that is something that I'll hold in my heart for forever, because you will never see somebody like this again, and you will never experience something like this again," Kantamneni described.
Ovechkin's record goal turned out to be the only one in the Capitals 4-1 loss to the N.Y. Islanders on the road. His score came on a second-period power play, as Ovechkin notched his first-ever goal on Ilanders' Goalie Ilya Sorokin.
The Capitals will open a special Ovi Shop at Capital One Arena Monday, as fans will be able to buy various merchandise related to Ovechkin's new status as the NHL's all-time goals leader. ...read more read less
