ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The community is rallying around a local business after its registers were cleared out in a robbery earlier this week. Nothing could have prepared Ashley Martinez for what happened that day. Surveillance video shows a man walk into her coffee shop and walk out with a w
ad of cash.
"Is this real? Is this really happening?” said Martinez, co-owner of Cup of Cozy in Westside Albuquerque.
Martinez recounts the crime that happened at her shop earlier this week. "This guy walks in, he's in all black. He has one hand holding something on his waist. Hoodie real tight, could see a little bit of his face and he comes up to me and he kind of light mumbles at first and he's like, 'Give me what's in the register,'” said Martinez.
Martinez did what he asked after noticing a gun holstered at his waist. "And that's kind of like when it hit me what was actually happening. And I was thinking to myself, 'Is he going to shoot me when we're done once I'm done giving him the money from the second register?” said Martinez.

A scary moment for the coffee shop owner. "And I kind of just started to talk to God in my head, and I was like, 'Okay, if he shoots me, it's going to hurt, and that's okay, but I'm not dying today.' I need to be here for my kids,” said Martinez.
After getting the money, the man left, and Martinez immediately went to lock the door before calling 911. The shop has been open for a mere four months, which is why Martinez says this robbery felt personal.
"It was like somebody coming into my home and taking something from me, so I would just tell all businesses, but especially small business owners, just to be aware,” said Martinez.

To warn small businesses to be on the lookout, Martinez shared security footage of the robbery on social media. The video now has over 17,000 views.
"The next day, we had so many customers, so many new customers, just like, 'We heard what happened, we want to support you.' So, we've felt a lot of love and support from the community. It's been really, really nice,” said Martinez.
The owner said she is grateful for the community's support, and she believes that there's more good out there than bad. Martinez does not know exactly how much money was stolen during the robbery but said the Albuquerque Police Department is investigating. ...read more read less
