APD to hold event updating crime victims on statuses of their cases

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Officers work each day to solve crimes, trying to get victims justice. In an effort to help those people, the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) is hosting an event to help update victims on where their case stands.
No one wants to become a victim of crime, and when
it happens, it can be one of the hardest things a person can face. It could take years before they can receive justice.
“So many times when people become a victim of a crime, they go through a lot of trauma and many times grief, and the combination of both grief and trauma, very difficult,” said Terry Huertaz, a victim liaison manager with the Albuquerque Police Department.

That's why for National Crime Victims' Rights Week, APD is hosting an event that victims and their families can come to and get an update on their cases. “This provides support to them, as well as an understanding; a point of contact for them, as well as it establishes a line of communication for them. So we can hopefully guide them towards the process,” said Lt. Armando Hernandez.
This will give victims and their families a chance to speak with detectives they normally wouldn't get hold of.
“They oftentimes, sometimes don't have that communications with the families. So this opportunity with families can come during the evening to come visit detectives, officers, and have those conversations open and being available to them,” said Lt. Hernandez.

It is also a way to provide resources to community members as they wait for updates on their cases. As they wait for them to transition from the investigation phase to the judicial one, everyone can still feel they have the support they need.
“Well, I think even coming to this event can be a little emotional. But what I can tell them is they're going to get the support they deserve, whether it be from the department or all of the resources that are there, they will get that support,” said Terry Huertaz.
The event will take place on Thursday, April 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Los Duranes Community Center. For more information on the event or National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, tune into the Albuquerque Police Department's social media for daily updates this week. ...read more read less
