NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- As part of the Interstate 64 Gap Segment C Widening project, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will implement a shift in traffic, starting as early as Sunday. According to a release from the department, beginning as early as Sunday, April 6, drivers tr aveling on I-64 west from east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit, which is exit 234, to the New Kent and James City County line, should expect a shift in long-term traffic. VDOT says the traffic shift is estimated to be in place through summer 2026, with the project scheduled for completion is early as late 2027. Drivers should expect two weeks of overnight single-lane closures starting today. Closures will occur from Sunday through Saturday, and will begin as early as 7 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following morning. The traffic shift will involve installing a temporary traffic barrier and shifting traffic 5 feet to the right. The department added that aside from the widening and pavement rehabilitation, the project will also include the repair, rehabilitation, and widening of two bridges on I-64 east and west. According to VDOT, additional repairs also include the installation of overhead signage and advanced traffic management technology systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls and storm drainage box culverts and pipes.
