Gov. Beshear warns residents about rising floodwaters as Frankfort officials order evacuations

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Governor Andy Beshear is urging Kentuckians to stay safe and take precautions as rising floodwaters continue to threaten communities across the state.
In a social media post earlier today, Beshear warned residents to avoid traveling through flooded areas and to
move to higher ground if necessary.
“So, please, everybody be careful. If the water is still rising and you need to move to high ground, please do it. If you are out traveling and you come upon a road that has water over it, do not drive through it. We’ve tragically lost two individuals, two Kentuckians, two children of God already and we don’t want to lose any more,” Beshear said.
As the Kentucky River continues to rise, officials in Frankfort are closing roads and businesses as the city braces for unprecedented water levels.
Mayor Layne Wilkerson says many residents have already evacuated, including those in areas not typically affected by river flooding.
“Many people that are in Frankfort haven’t seen anything like this. And so we’re encouraging people to not take this lightly. Evacuate if you have the opportunity to do so. If you need help evacuating, we’re asking people to call the city,” Wilkerson said.
The city is assisting evacuees by placing them in shelters or hotels. Meanwhile, officials are going door-to-door to warn residents who may need to evacuate as conditions worsen.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are urging residents to remain vigilant as more rain is expected in the coming days.
