Major flooding hits Shelby County rivers
SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The City of Shelbyville is dealing with major flooding this morning as both the Big Blue and Little Blue rivers rise to dangerous levels.
Emergency crews are urging residents in low-lying areas to evacuate as conditions are
dangerous. The Big Blue River is nearing it’s record height of 20.4 feet and the Little Blue River has peaked at 13.28 inches, and is beginning to recede despite being in a major flood stage.
“As of this evening, significant damage has already occurred throughout the floodplain, including uprooted trees that are now floating downstream and the floating of padding structures in Sunset Park,” Jenna Martin, a spokesperson for Shelbyville said. “These developments underscore the increasing velocity and strength of the floodwaters”
Shelbyville’s Fire and Police Departments, along with Indiana DNR and State Police, are leading evacuation and rescue efforts, with evacuations urged in several areas including Walkerville, the south side of the Big Blue River, and the Walnut Grove Campground off London Road.
Traffic is not allowed through River Road.
Sandbags are available on a first-come, first-serve basis outside the Street Department at 606 Hale Road.
An emergency shelter supplied by the American Red Cross is open at the Shelby County Fairgrounds for those who need a safe place to go.
Officials continue to stress: do not enter flooded areas, whether by car or on foot. It not only puts lives at risk but also delays emergency response.
