INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each week on Community Link, Carolene Mays takes a look at an organization or business that is making a positive impact on the community.
This week, 100 Black Men of Indianapolis, an organization dedicated to mentoring youth, has been ser
ving the community for 40 years.
Founded in the 1960s in New York, 100 Black Men was established to address issues facing the Black community. The Indianapolis chapter is one of the oldest, focusing on youth development through mentorship and educational programs.
“What they see is what they’ll be,” Craig Kitchen, Executive Director of 100 Black Men, said.
The organization offers a variety of programs, including an African-American history program, a Botillion leadership program for high school male seniors, and financial literacy programs.
They also collaborate with Indianapolis Public Schools and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana. Most of the programs are coed, with only the Botillion and team mentoring programs being male-only.
The organization believes in exposing young women to positive male role models as well. An upcoming event in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association will be held April 21 at Purpose of Life Ministries, focusing on the role of Black males as caregivers.
