Franklin couple’s home flooded in storm
FRANKLIN, Ind. (WISH) — Johnson County was hit by devastating floods Friday and Saturday, but it’s not the first time the area has seen record rainfall.
Rebecca and Lance White are lifelong Franklin residents and have lived in their home for near
ly 60 years. The recent rainfall knocked out their power and left them without heat for at least 24 hours.
“I have a disabled mother in here,” Rebecca White said. “I have a disabled son in here, so being without hot water and heat, it’s a real challenge.”
Saturday’s nightmare was all too familiar.
“It floods,” Lance White said. “Every time we get even a little bit of rain, we get water in the yard, which goes in the basement, which took my furnace and my water heater out this morning and not to mention probably $5,000 worth of tools.”
The damage from this weekend’s flood only adds to the existing destruction. Their backyard is lined with debris, all of it still leftover from the unrelenting flood that ravaged the area in 2008.
“2008 was like mother nature kicking our butts,” Lance White said.
For 17 years, the debris sat there and a part of their roof is still hanging off the side of their home. They’re both disabled and can’t afford to fix any of it.
But today, it’s the things they can’t replace that were damaged or washed away from a shed they’ve managed to keep dry all these years.
“These are things from the 2008 flood that we managed to salvage was in that shed. Family heritage and heirlooms and it’s just gone,” Rebecca White said.
The Whites say even smaller floods often leave them without heat for days, so they expect this flood to leave them in the cold for days.
“It’s still underwater and it’s just getting worse,” Rebecca White said.
