KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Ahead of Saturday’s match at Children’s Mercy Park, some Sporting KC fans told FOX4 they were optimistic about the soccer club’s recent change in leadership.
On Monday, Sporting KC announced it had mutually parted ways with manager and head coach Peter Vermes.
“
It's kind of a new era without a coach that has been here for a long time. We're excited to see everybody come out for this rivalry game because it's important,” said Sporting KC fan Auggie Mueller.

Saturday's match against St. Louis City was sporting KC's first since the club announced it was parting ways with Vermes.
“I think the front office has a long way to go. Look around you. The enthusiasm is pretty low, and the fan experience has been declining for several years. So I'm looking forward to more changes,” said Sporting KC fan Blake Mackey.
“I feel pretty optimistic. At least it's a change. I'm excited to see the St. Louis fans. Hopefully, we send them home crying.“
Vermes assumed the position of head coach in 2009 and, since taking the reins, led the team to several successful seasons, including 11 playoff appearances and four first-place appearances in the regular season.

However, the soccer club has struggled over the last few seasons.
“Any change right now I think is good. I think that the year that we had a few years back when we went to the playoffs and stuff, it got everybody really excited, and we haven't quite seen that come back in the last few years. So I think this is going to be a good thing,” said Sporting KC fan Alec Bartz.
Fans' optimism proved to be warranted, as Sporting would go on to win the game 2-0. It's their first win of the season. ...read more read less
