TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center announced on Saturday that one of its resident animals has died. The zoo announced on social media on April 5 that Erin, a Southern three-banded armadillo, died at the age of 22. Zoo staff recently celebrated Erin's birthday on March 17. "Erin played an important role being an education ambassador animal for her species and took part in educational programs that taught many children and guests about armadillos & their various adaptations. While she was kept in an area behind-the-scenes when not on program, she was well-loved by staff and everyone that met her." People wishing to share fond memories of seeing Erin at the zoo are encouraged to do so on Facebook. Erin gave birth to a baby at the zoo on May 5, 2015. The pairing of Erin and fellow armadillo Mulligan was brought about as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), a program within the Association of Zoos and Aquariums that oversees breeding to help threatened and endangered species. Three other zoo animals have passed away recently. These include the following: Ryker the painted dog - Oct. 3, 2024. Ho Ho the sun bear - Nov. 25, 2024. Cassy the mountain lion - March 11, 2025.
