Police: Multiple people struck by car on U Street, 7 hospitalized

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said one person is in custody following a collision on U Street that left seven people hospitalized overnight.
At around 1:15 a.m., the driver of an Audi A5 was driving recklessly and lost control of his vehicle on U Street, str
iking a pedestrian, a utility pole and a metal trash can, investigators said.
The vehicle's impact with the trash can hurt additional people who were on the sidewalk.

MPD said the man who was struck by the car was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Four other men were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while two others were treated at the scene.
The driver, 31-year-old Eric Lyons of Northwest D.C., was arrested at the scene. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence (DUI) and Reckless Driving.
