URMC hosts surgical workshop for Vertus High School boys

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – The University of Rochester Medical Center hosted a surgical skills workshop at the Saunders Orthopaedics & Physical Performance Center in Rochester for boys who attend Vertus High School. The workshops included surgeon-led instruction and practice setting fractures, i
mplanting stabilization rods in bones, splinting, casting, and more.
Some of the instructors are from underrepresented minorities who understand the value of this kind of mentoring. The workshop encouraged high school students to think a few years ahead about a rewarding career in medicine by giving the students hands-on practice to expand their interest.
Organizers say shadowing opportunities, one-on-one mentorship, and networking significantly increase the odds that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can succeed in the field of medicine. ...read more read less
