More rain Saturday afternoon and evening in central Indiana
Apr 05, 2025
Friday, April 4th: Rainiest April day in seven years
The rain from Friday night into this morning is beginning to move out. But this batch provided Indianapolis 2.46" of rain Friday, the rainiest single April day in seven years! It will go down as the sixth-rainiest April day on record. A given A
pril sees 4.34" of rain on average for the entire month. April is our fourth-wettest month on average.
Rain moves out this morning, more this afternoon/evening
Since last night, many spots have received 2-4" of rainfall. However, as forecast, our southern counties so far have received the highest rain totals. Some localized amounts 6-8"+ have occurred in portions of Morgan and Johnson Counties. Travel Advisories are being posted with a countywide Travel WARNING in Morgan County. Individuals in that county are to refrain from all travel and comply with all emergency measures. That's in place because of the flooding.
Madison County also issued a flood warning on Saturday. According to the county's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency, the warning is in effect until Tuesday afternoon. Specifically, the White River at Anderson is flooding and reached 11.4 feet by 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. It is expected to crest at 13.4 on Sunday and then fall below flood stage by Tuesday morning.
Madison Co. said that once the river reaches 13 feet, Edgewood Park and Grand Avenue close between Alexandria Pike and Broadway. At this point, residents should prepare for sandbagging operations and potential evacuations.
Those living along Hazlett Street, near W 1st Street and Madison Avenue, near W 2nd Street and Sycamore Street and along Riverside Drive will be notified, the Madison County Emergency Maintenance and Homeland Security said.
Dry hours are promised for later this morning and early afternoon ahead of more rain. This next activity will move in by mid-afternoon and continue through the evening. No severe weather will be associated with this, just more constant rain. This activity will exit the state before Midnight. An additional 1-2" of rain is likely by Sunday morning.
Pattern change starts Sunday: much cooler
Sunday will be much cooler, with highs only in the 40s. It will come with lingering scattered showers but not as widespread as the last few rounds of rain. Several days of more late-winter-like conditions will be in store through Tuesday night. High pressure moves in and will give central Indiana northwest wind gusts that will keep things cooler. I anticipate we'll have two nights with subfreezing temperatures, those being Monday and Tuesday night. A hard freeze is likely Monday night.
Next week will be a bit unorganized when it comes to our weather pattern, thanks to an upper-level trough overhead. A few bouts of scattered showers are possible starting late Wednesday and will continue through the day on Thursday. Temperatures by this time will start to moderate back to near-normal. Next weekend, luckily, we'll start to dry out!
