MICHIGAN CITY (WISH) — An armed man was shot and killed by police in Michigan City after running from a traffic stop, Indiana State Police say.
ISP says that a Michigan City police officer pulled over a red Dodge SUV for an equipment violation around 5:30 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Fra
nklin Street.
“During the traffic stop, an armed male subject fled on foot from the scene and officers initiated a foot pursuit. During that chase, an officer discharged their firearm, striking the suspect,” ISP said in the press release. ISP has not said how many officers were involved or why they fired their weapons.
The suspect was given first aid at the scene, but later died after getting to the hospital.
ISP has not identified the man.
After the shooting, Michigan City Police Chief Marty Corley placed the officer involved on paid administrative leave and called ISP to investigate.
ISP is reviewing all body camera and in-car video, but said they will not release any more information on the shooting.
