NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Deutsches Haus is hosting "Volksfest," which is a German celebration to celebrate spring, and WGNO's Kenny Lopez takes us there!
"Volksfest is like a a mini Oktoberfest, and means basically a festival of the people. We celebrate German culture, and it celebrates the spring,
" David Moore with Deutsches Haus said.
Spring has sprung at Deutsches Haus in Mid-City where the German spirit is in full bloom.
"At the event we will have German food like bratwurst and sausages. We will have wine tastings and Schnapp's tastings. We will also have a dachshund dog race on Saturday, as well as maypole dancing," Moore said.
The story behind ‘The Chicken Dance’ & why we do it at Oktoberfest
"We do a simple dance, kind of like a folk dance. It is almost like a square dance. You go in and out. You go under and over. We are alternating around the pole. Some are going clockwise and some are going counter-clockwise. When we go in and out, we are making a pattern around the pole," Linda Horton, maypole dancer said.
At Volksfest you will also hear music from the Alpenlaenders band. You'll hear the sounds of a very unique instrument, the alphorn.
"The way you create the sound is that you push the air through it. There are no valves, so you got to control the sound with just your lips, but the tighter you make your lips, the higher the sound goes and the more you have to push the air through the alphorn. This instrument is about 12-feet long, and is used to communicate through the Alps region," Helman Mueller, alphorn player said.
"Volksfest" runs Friday, April 4, through Sunday. Admission is $5, and kids under 12 get in for free.
