HONOLULU (KHON2) - When was the last time you rode a bike? How about riding your bike through your neighborhood and town and learn something at the same time?
Next Saturday in Kalihi will mark another year of what they call "Kalihi Ahupua'a Ride," organized by the non-profit KVIBE, Kalihi Valley
Instructional Bike Exchange.

After almost a decade of this tradition, Program Coordinator Nuki Makasini says that the community enjoys this tradition, with over a hundred participants predicted to show up.
"I think this year, you can definitely expect about 100-120 riders exploring down Kalihi and the response has really been positive from community members," Makasini said. "We have parents, we have partners, our community partners and just talking about the love that our youth talk and express themselves at each stop."
Young people are a key demographic for the organization, allowing KVIBE to provide youth with a passion for physical activity.

"Registered, we have about 40-45 and we see about 10-12 everyday," Makasini said. "So, here at KVIBE, we promote physical fitness, that's probably number one. We do different workshops upstairs, advocacy as well. So, that is one we do especially for the ride."
Young participants in the organization are encouraged to take on leadership roles, with the bike ride being led by KVIBE's young ones.
"So, we make them come every Thursday and every Tuesday we have our intern night, so they will show up and we have them break down how they can start their speeches, how do they introduce themselves, how do they carry themselves when they do their speeches, and just day by day we break down those barriers that they have," Makasini said.
KVIBE hopes to inspire young people to become leaders and grow in ways that they may not usually be able to in other communities.

"One highlight I know that I have heard was they grow in a different way especially when they come to KVIBE," Makasini said. "In different communities or different organizations, they are very timid and when they come here, they find a community with their peers and they are able to express themselves in a different way, so that is one of the highlights that we have."
This year's ride will be an eight-mile ride all the way from Kalihi Valley at Ho'oulu 'Aina down to Sand Island, with KVIBE getting some help from community authorities to ensure safety at the event.
"Well, this year we do have HPD, we are partnering with them this year. They will be escorting us down from Ho'oulu 'Aina all the way down to Mauliola," Makasini said.
