Complaints lead to results for damages at Forest Lawn Cemetery

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — Fixes are popping up in a Lincolnton cemetery that WCCB has reported problems at for months. Forest Lawn Cemetery and Mausoleum patrons first noticed damaged graves in February, now some customers are seeing results they’re happy with.
Slowly but surely graveyard damages ar
e disappearing at Forest Lawn. In an email, a representative of the North Carolina Cemetery Commission told WCCB Charlotte’s Zane Cina that the Commission visited the cemetery and found that “the grounds have improved,” but noted “there is still work to be done.” This Cemetery Commission says Forest Lawn staff have been cooperative in resolving the 23 complaints that the Commission has received on the cemetery. The Commission says it has addressed and responded to all 23 complaints, half of which dealt with specific individual damage or neglect.
The Cemetery Commission confirmed that all damaged granite on Forest Lawn grounds has been repaired. Some grave markers were said to have been removed, cleaned, and replaced or reset. A WCCB crew visited the cemetery Friday and after a thorough search, all previously identified headstones damage appeared to be fixed. A single headstone was found to have a crack down its middle, but the Commission assured work is being done to rectify the damage. Exposed dirt can still be seen over some grave sites, but it is clear that seed and straw have helped greatly to regrow grass in many areas. There were no sunken in graves found in the cemetery, despite past problems.
The Commission noted that there are still a number of damaged vases in the graveyard. Replacement vases have been ordered by Cemetery ownership and the N.C. Cemetery Commission expects the new vases to arrive within the next week. The Commission said it will continue to provide oversight of the Forest Lawn fixes, and future complaints will be addressed as they arrive.
Angela Smith buried her father in the cemetery just weeks ago. She visits his headstone weekly and said the grounds crew has been a blessing to her family. Smith said it rained heavily during her father’s burial. She commended the grounds crew for their work in properly filling the grave in the poor conditions. Smith said there was an issue with her father’s headstone, but cemetery staff worked quickly to resolve the problem. “There was an issue… and they were able to take care of it, and they did it while my mother and I were still sitting here,” Smith said.
Smith said she visits the cemetery weekly and sees staff working to improve the grounds. “I think that they do care,” Smith said, “They’re mowing grass and, you know, making repairs that need to be made.”
Forest Lawn Cemetery owner, Faithful Heritage Holdings, Inc., did not answer calls for questions.
The state’s Cemetery Commission continues to urge anyone who notices a decline in Forest Lawn grounds to complete a complaint form by following the process linked here. Complaints can also be reported by emailing reports@nccemetery.org.
