Property tax relief bill passes unanimously in state Senate

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — This week, state lawmakers voted 'yes' to a large property tax credit bill at the state capitol.
State senators unanimously approved the amended version of House Bill 1176. The bill would spend over $400 million to increase the property tax credit for homeowners from $500
to $1,250 a year. It also raises the threshold for people to qualify for the homestead tax credit.
Lawmakers also wanted to ensure that there are limits as to how much local cities and towns can raise their own property taxes if the bill is signed.
"So, it disturbs me that we take decision making from the locals and bring it to the state level in this issue of property tax," Sen. Tim Mathern (D-Fargo) said.

"If we are to pass property tax relief without good caps in place, I would say we will fail," Sen. Mark Weber (R-Casselton) said. "This bill must provide relief and reform. And if we fail to do that, we may find ourselves back here in a few short years because our past experience has demonstrated that."
The credit does not apply to cities and towns that have already voted for their own bond referendums.
The bill also expands the renter's refund program by allowing people a refund up to $600 a year.
Governor Armstrong previously testified in favor of the bill.
