PORTERVILLE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – A Tulare County man is in custody after a nearly 12-hour manhunt. Deputies say that Kenneth Bratton, 43, fired at them while they were serving an eviction notice in Porterville.
According to the Tulare County Sheriff's Department, Kenneth Bratton had an outst
anding warrant for identity theft and fraud.
"Kenneth Bratton is somebody that is very well known to our agency. He's been arrested multiple times," said Tulare County Sheriff's Lt. Randy Gunderman.
Around 10:30 Thursday morning, two Tulare County deputies went to the 600 block of West Mulberry Avenue to serve the eviction notice.
"They made contact with the tenants, and as they were ensuring that there was no one else inside the house, they contacted a male who was seemingly hiding behind a laundry room door," Lt. Gunderman said.
Gunderman says a struggle then broke out as deputies tried to take Bratton into custody.
"Deputies tried to utilize a Taser, which was ineffective," he said.
According to deputies, Bratton grabbed for a firearm located inside his waistband and fired one shot. Thankfully, no one was hurt. Deputies managed to grab the firearm, but Bratton took off in a stolen car.
"You never know what you could be walking into, and this is a perfect example of that," Gunderman said.
After receiving tips from the community about Bratton's possible hiding place, deputies found him at a home in Terra Bella almost 12 hours after the initial contact. Officials say that when deputies located him, Bratton had ingested fentanyl. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment before being booked into the county jail. ...read more read less
