WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- The Wichita Police Department says violent crimes are down compared to last year and five years ago. Property crimes have also dropped.

Violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. They are down five percent f
rom this time last year and down seven percent from this time five years ago.
Property crimes include burglary, larceny and auto theft. They are down 19% from this time last year and 15% from this time five years ago.

“These reductions in reported crime show that our efforts as a community, and investment in our people, technology and infrastructure are paying off," Captain Aaron Moses said in a statement.
He said that the WPD has developed a data-driven crime reduction strategy over the last year to identify people likely to be involved in crime.
"Early last month, the second prong to our approach came online with Risk Terrain Modeling, an initiative aimed at addressing the geographic drivers of crime in a wholistic way, working with community and other City Departments to improve quality of life in our neighborhoods," Moses said.
