Grant Fisher ready for inaugural Grand Slam Track event
Apr 04, 2025
Parkite distance runner Grant Fisher is coming off the indoor season of anyone’s dreams. In back-to-back-to-back races in February, the 27 year old shattered two indoor world records in the 3,000m and 5,000m events. Fisher took a few weeks off afterwards to rest and relax — spending time with f
amily and friends. He spent March ramping his fitness back up. This weekend, he’ll kick off his outdoor season at the inaugural Grand Slam Track event in Kingston, Jamaica. Grand Slam Track was founded by retired American sprinter Michael Johnson. The four-time Olympic gold medalist wants to “save” track by putting it on the world stage more than once every four years. There will be four Grand Slam events, or slams, this year, offering increased prize money, broadcast visibility and more. As part of Grand Slam’s unique format, Fisher will be required to race two events at each slam — the 3,000 and 5,000m races. If the Parkite is the top finisher between both events, he can walk away with a sweet $100,000 each time. The eighth place finisher at each slam is the last man or woman to be paid, taking home $10,000 for their efforts. “I’m most excited for that one in Jamaica,” said Fisher on the Grand Slam season. “It’s the first one, and it’s in a new place. I think it’ll be really cool to go down there. Jamaica has such a good history in sprinting.”Fisher is anticipating strong crowds sticking around for all the races. He is also excited for innovations the league is going to bring, such as qualified challengers for the races, increased fan interaction opportunities and more. Thursday, the runners had press opportunities where they dressed up in celebration of the inaugural event. The top competitors in Fisher’s long distance category in Kingston are Hagos Gebrhiwet of Ethiopia and Ronald Kwemoi of Kenya. There will be five challengers at this slam — more top distance runners. At each slam, there will be 48 regulars, or competitors, and 48 challengers. “I’m really, really excited just to see how it all kicks off,” added Fisher. “The league has great plans. … I think it’ll be fun, and there’ll be a lot of surprises.”The other three slams will be in May and June in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Fisher would love to continue his success at Grand Slam but is hoping to peak in September’s World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Everyday’s races in Kingston will be streaming on Peacock, with Saturday and Sunday’s also broadcast on The CW Network. Fisher’s 5,000m Friday is set to begin at 5:56 p.m., and Sunday’s 3,000m at 2:49 p.m. Parkite and Rio Olympics 1,500m gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz Jr. will be on pre and post race shows. The post Grant Fisher ready for inaugural Grand Slam Track event appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
