Rain moves in raising flooding concerns this weekend in central Indiana
Apr 04, 2025
Lighter rain fell on Friday but is adding to the three-day totals. Some locations since Wednesday have exceeded 3" and over 4" in Bargersville (Johnson Co). This is the 9th WETTEST open to an April in Indianapolis on record. We're going to add to that with more rain heading in our direction for Frid
ay evening and early overnight.
A large area of rain will spread east this evening coming from Illinois. This line will produce thundery downpours along with locally heavy rainfall. I anticipate that some flash flood warnings will be posted with this line. Some of these could contain small hail and an isolated gusty wind threast, too. We already have an Areal Flood Watch in effect for tonight and Saturday across all of central Indiana.
That flood watch blankets several states, thanks to a stalled front that will allow lots of rain for the weekend. Area creeks, streams and rivers will be spilling out of their banks and rise to record levels downstate early next week. Tonight's rain will peak coverage this evening before Midnight with showers continuing through midday Saturday. A few spots could see 2-3" of rain from this round before a "break" Saturday midday. Going into the weekend, several spots already have 3-4" of rain from earlier in the week.
Then, a secondary round of showers is likely for Saturday afternoon and evening. The heaviest rain will stay in the southern portions of the state. But it will add to heavy totals from Friday night/early Saturday's rain. When all is said and done, it wouldn't surprise me if a few hometowns approached 4-5" in total rain by the end of the weekend.
Then, a PATTERN CHANGE emerges, and it begins Sunday. The jet stream will dig south, nudging the front out of the state and bringing a spell of much cooler but calmer weather next week. The chilly air will be felt as early as Saturday evening as temperatures fall and only remain in the 40s on Sunday. Nighttime lows next week could fall well below freezing in the early morning hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.
