(KRON) -- A San Mateo man was found guilty Thursday after arranging to meet who he thought was a 14-year-old girl, but was instead a man working for a civilian organization called Worldwide Predator Hunters, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Between March and May 2023,
Richard Smith, who was 35 years old at the time, was sending a flurry of photo and text messages to the purported 14-year-old girl named “Maggie,” prosecutors wrote. Early in their conversations, “Maggie” told Smith that she was underage.
“I’m 14. Is that off putting for you or no?” wrote “Maggie” in a text message.
Smith responded, “oh ok, it’s cool.”
“Maggie” was actually Justin, who the DA’s office said worked for the nonprofit organization Worldwide Predator Hunters.

“The organization focused on identifying and exposing child predators who use online platforms to exploit their victims,” the DA’s office wrote.
Smith arranged to meet with “Maggie” at Laurie Meadows Park in San Mateo on May 16, 2023, for sexual relations. When he arrived at the set time, he approached an undercover San Mateo Police Department officer and was arrested.
On Thursday, the San Mateo County jury returned guilty verdicts to all felony charges, including arranging to meet a minor for lewd purposes, showing pornography to a minor and contact with a minor to commit a sexual offense. Smith was also found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of lewd acts with a minor.
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Michael Wendler said that Smith “was every parent’s worst nightmare,” the DA’s office wrote.
Wendler granted the prosecution's request to keep Smith in custody until sentencing on May 1. ...read more read less
