TOPEKA (KSNT) - A man accused of killing a 37-year-old Topeka man and kidnapping a child last year received his sentence this week.
27 News checked with Shawnee County court records that show Rammelo H. Boatwright, 24, received 475 months or just under 40 years in prison for his part in the death
of Kyle E. Higgins in 2024. Boatwright previously pleaded guilty on Jan. 28 this year to the following charges:
Murder in the second degree.
Aggravated robbery.
Kidnapping.
Two counts of battery on a law enforcement officer.

The Topeka Police Department (TPD) was called into action around 4:15 a.m. on Aug. 20 on reports of an aggravated robbery near the intersection of Southwest 29th Street and Southwest MacVicar Avenue. Police were told a vehicle was stolen that still had a child inside.

Law enforcement later arrested Boatwright and a second man, Lorenzo, A. Pattmon III, 22, after a chase that ended near Southeast 29th Street and Southeast Minnesota Avenue. The child was later located by police near the 3200 block of Southwest Central Park.
Higgins was located by law enforcement around 8:30 a.m. on the same day suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.
The Shawnee County District Attorney's Office charged Boatwright and Pattmon for the kidnapping, police chase and death of Higgins. Boatwright was initially charged with 13 counts in total including murder in the first degree, robbery, aggravated endangering of a child and battery. However, the majority of these charges were dismissed in January 2025.
Pattmon is awaiting a jury trial which is scheduled to begin in June this year. He pleaded not guilty in January to charges of murder in the first degree, aggravated robbery, aggravated endangering of a child and other crimes.
