Flooding impacts local businesses as Kentucky River continues to rise
Apr 04, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — The relentless flooding across Central Kentucky is now impacting local businesses as the Kentucky River continues to overflow its banks.
Proud Mary’s BBQ, a popular riverside restaurant located just outside of Lexington, faced rapidly rising water levels Fri
day. According to the restaurant’s owner, Emilee Sierp, the river extended into their outdoor seating and bar area, engulfing the space within an hour.
“It’s rising a foot an hour… I’ve owned the building for 10 years and I’ve never seen that,” Sierp told ABC36 News Now.
The business is still recovering from a previous flood in February. Sierp says they’ve never seen the river rise this quickly and the continued rainfall is making the situation worse.
“I mean, it’s heartbreaking… You don’t expect to flood twice in one year, especially going into our busy season,” Sierp said.
With more rain expected heading into the weekend, Proud Mary’s BBQ is working quickly to move supplies out of harm’s way.
ABC36 News Now meteorologists are forecasting additional rainfall, which could further worsen conditions for local businesses and residents along the Kentucky River.
