KYLE, Texas (KXAN) -- Kyle got a new fire station Friday, helping to fill a gap in emergency response coverage in what the fire department said is an underserved and rapidly growing area. The Kyle Fire Department and Hays County Emergency Services District No. 5 celebrated the opening of Fire St ation #4 on Friday morning. The new station is located at 110 High Road, Kyle. The 9,385-square-foot station cost $7.6 million and was funded in part by a $3 million American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grant awarded by the Hays County Commissioners Court in September 2022, according to Hays County ESD No. 5. The ESD said in a press release that the station will "significantly improve emergency response capabilities in an underserved area while serving as a model for environmentally conscious and health-focused fire station design." (KXAN Photo/Todd Bailey) Fire Station #4 incorporates "smart infrastructure" and "green building elements" that were designed in partnership with Texas State University's Connected Infrastructure for Education, Demonstration and Applied Research Consortium (CIEDAR) program, the release said. The station has sensors for real-time structural monitoring and other design features that support environmental safeguard, the release noted. ESD No. 5 said Station #4 "represents a forward-thinking model for firefighter safety, sustainability, and innovation." Kyle has faced growth over the last several years, and the fire department has talked to KXAN in the past about dealing with the brunt of growing pains in the form of firefighters being spread too thin. Kyle Fire Department working to keep up as city continues to grow Division Chief of Training Freddy Rolon told KXAN back in 2022 that the department was struggling to keep up with growth and looking to open a fourth fire station. “We already started thinking about a fifth and sixth station,” Rolon said at the time.
