FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A man from Reedley was charged Thursday for carrying a firearm and having ammunition in relation to drug trafficking, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The DOJ says a grand jury returned an indictment Thursday against 41-year-old David Joseph Yama o
f Reedley and added charges of possession of alprazolam (known as Xanax) with intent to distribute, three counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition and one count of carrying a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking offense.
According to court documents, on Sept. 1, 2020, officers went to a gas station in Clovis and reported suspicious activity and contacted Yama and two of his associates.
Court documents state that after a search of Yama's car, officers uncovered a large amount of cash, ammunition, plastic baggies, vials containing fentanyl, and more than 100 alprazolam pills.
The court documents state that a search of Yama's residence on the same day revealed additional controlled substances and hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Several months later, court documents state, in January 2021, Yama was stopped driving the same car.
After a search of the car in 2021, it resulted in the seizure of more alprazolam pills, ammunition, and a ghost gun, according to the DOJ.
The DOJ says that before September 2020, Yama was convicted of five felony drug trafficking and firearms offenses and is prohibited from possessing firearms.
