(FOX 5/KUSI) — A Chula Vista man pleaded guilty on Thursday in connection with a high-speed chase and crash that took the lives of two adults allegedly being smuggled into the United States.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Sergio Palomera, 23, entered his plea in federal court, wh
ere he reportedly admitted to "transporting two undocumented immigrants who died when he crashed his car while fleeing U.S. Border Patrol at speeds exceeding 110 mph."
The DOJ said Border Patrol agents reportedly saw on remote video surveillance when Palomera helped a man and a woman enter his car near the U.S.-Mexico border on Oct. 22, 2024.
An agent responded and saw the vehicle heading west on Highway 905, a highway that runs for a few miles in south San Diego.
The DOJ said that the agent attempted to stop the vehicle, and while Palomera at first pulled onto an offramp, he then accelerated through a red traffic light and reentered the highway, eventually driving over 110 mph.
Within a minute, Palomera reportedly lost control of the car and it rolled over, with him and the woman ejected. She died instantly, and the adult man died some time later at a hospital after suffering a head injury, while Palomera had some injuries, the DOJ said.
Palomera is accused of the "transportation of certain aliens resulting in death," which could result in a sentence of death or life in prison, according to the DOJ.
His sentencing is scheduled for the morning of July 2. ...read more read less
