Family's utility bill corrected after KFOR steps in

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) - It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks for the Arnold family.
“Just feeling really down not knowing what I was going to do,” said Leah Arnold.
The Arnolds live in Edmond and use Oklahoma City Utilities. Last month, they got a notice warning them they were usin
g an unusually high amount of water. They looked and didn’t find any leaks.
However, on March 13, Arnold was stunned to see that her account showed her family used 350,000 gallons of water for the month. She said they were told it would cost around $3,000.

"We were a little panicked,” said Arnold.
Arnold said the city sent out an inspector who didn’t find any leaks either.
“He said, your meter’s working just fine… When my husband said, 'Well, what do we do? He basically said, 'you'll just have to pay the bill,’” said Arnold. “They didn't really want to work with us or help us."
So Arnold reached out to KFOR, and we gave the Oklahoma City Utilities Department a call.
"By the end of my workday, I got a call from Oklahoma City Utilities, and they said that they had gotten a call from KFOR and that they were basically saying, 'yeah, it was a meter error,” said Arnold.
A spokeswoman for the City of Oklahoma City Utilities Department sent KFOR the following statement:
“After further investigation, we identified that the customer’s high consumption for the March billing cycle was a result of a meter reading error, which has now been corrected.
The customer did not receive a bill with incorrect information. When our Customer Service team was alerted to the high consumption, they informed the customer that they may potentially have a high bill if their meter read was accurate. However, as the meter reading error has been corrected, their bill, which will soon be issued, will reflect accurate billing details.
A supervisor spoke with the customer yesterday to inform them of the error, apologize for the inconvenience and confirm that the updated consumption aligns with their usage.”
Arnold’s bill is now just $106.
"This is such a huge weight off of our shoulders,” said Arnold. “I'm really glad that you guys were able to help talk to them and get them to kind of see sense." ...read more read less
