STILLWATER, Okla. (KFOR) — The recovery process continues nearly three weeks after the wildfires.
A disaster relief team from Texas is helping take the burden off homeowners.
"It's sad when you move up on the property and you see the people, they lost everything," said Ernest McNabb, team le
ader with Texans on Mission.
Texans on Mission is in Stillwater helping those impacted by the March 14 wildfires.
"It takes a lot of equipment to clean off the place, to get them ready to rebuild, and it saves them a lot of money because a lot of them don't have the insurance," said McNabb.
Dozens of homes destroyed in Stillwater wildfires
McNabb says the emotional impact is just as important as the physical labor.
"When you first get on a job, you see a homeowner and they're kind of depressed, they know that it's something they can't clean up, they can't do, and by the time we get through, well, you see a smile on their face," said McNabb.
As for the team, lending a hand is more than just a job; McNabb describes it as a privilege.
"We get a real blessing out of it because it is our way of serving Christ," said McNabb.
At the end of each job, the team prays with the homeowners and provides them with a new bible.
McNabb says each disaster they go to is different, and something unique about Stillwater is how the flames burned.
"The fires seem to just kind of be a ball of fire," said McNabb.
Some of the houses were left untouched, while others right next to them burned to the ground.
The team plans to stay in Stillwater through the weekend. ...read more read less
