KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A family in south Kansas City is grieving not only the loss of a mother and a father, but also the baby they were expecting.
"My child was pregnant with a baby, so it's not two lives gone, it's three lives gone," said Desiree Johnson, the mother of Aminah Johnson, who was kill
ed in a shooting Monday night.
Now, Desiree is offering her own reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the tragic death of her daughter and her daughter's fiancé, Derrick Rhodes.
Vernon County tornado leaves residents stunned: ‘Keep us in your prayers’
The couple was shot and killed after a dispute with friends near 98th and Marsh Avenue.
To make the pain even more heartbreaking, family members say the person who pulled the trigger was someone Aminah and Derrick considered a friend.
"I don't understand how a friend and someone that my daughter and her fiancé helped could ever get it to a point where now you're killing them," Desiree Johnson said, expressing her outrage and confusion over the senseless act.
Aminah Johnson, a mother of two with another child on the way, had a close friendship with the person who allegedly turned on her.
Desiree said that Aminah and her fiancé had recently had a falling out with their friends, one of whom had vandalized Aminah’s home. That confrontation escalated, leading to gunshots and the couple's deaths.
"I don't know if 'pissed off' is the word," Desiree said.
"This same young lady was supposed to be coming to Florida with my daughter, taking trips with my daughter – my daughter and her did hair together. You acted like a friend to my child and then you turned around and killed my child."
Kansas City police took one man into custody but released him due to lack of evidence. Desiree Johnson, devastated by the lack of answers, is now hoping a public reward will spur someone to come forward.
"Now when I talk to detectives, they tell me that nobody is talking – so I’m here to say that we're putting up a $5,000 reward for anyone who has information that can lead to the arrest and conviction," she said.

Desiree is now focusing on planning a funeral and caring for Aminah’s 4 and 7-year-olds, who are left to face a world without their mother.
