Eagle Creek cleans up severe storm aftermath
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Residents in the Eagle Creek area of Indianapolis on Thursday began the challenging task of cleaning up from the Wednesday night storm.
Along Lafayette Road, many downed powerlines and debris littered the area. Residents wer
e dealing with downed powerlines, trees on homes, and scattered debris.
Lafayette Road and Traders Lane were closed as linemen worked to restore powerlines.
An African-born citizen who has lived in the United States for the 10 years said the storm was the most significant he has endured during his time here. Eagle Creek resident Aistide Ngenda Hayo said, “The storm was new for me because I have never seen something like this before. My kids now have no place to play outdoors. Yeah, it is all a shock.”
Another an Eagle Creek resident, Jaana Delapaz, said, “We’ve dealt with a couple of storms before, but last night had to be, by far, the most devastating experience I’ve had being at home. I was in my basement and praying on it because whatever was going on was serious outside, and it sounded like it was on the main road.”
The owner of a video production studio on Lafayette Road said his business has been without power since Wednesday night and the building sustained noticeable marks. Nathan Rausch with Invention Pictures Inc. said, “It’s a work-from-home kind of day the rest of the day. I’m still waiting for insurance to call me back. It’s just lots of this metal debris, which I’m not sure where it came from. But, one colossal chunk was on top of the roof with damage from nails that went through the roof’s membrane.”
The Red Cross sent staff and volunteers door-to-door in neighborhoods west of Eagle Creek on Raceway Road and 56th Street as they assessed damage and checked in on people. Terry Stigdon, CEO of the Indiana region American Red Cross, said, “We’re seeing different stages of damage to houses. We want people to know. It’s OK. If you think the damage is too small, call us anyway and let us help.”
